Would you like to be a part of reviving
Gloucester’s maritime history? Would you like to be a part
of a community that loves the sea, wants to help preserve the environment
and the history of Gloucester? How about being a part of a community
that works hard and parties hearty?
Then come hang out in America’s
oldest fishing port and join with Adventure's
crew of volunteers. Help us restore the last of Gloucester's Grand
Bank Dory-Fishing Schooners!
Volunteering for Adventure will
give you the opportunity to learn something new, a place to offer
the skills you might already have, and a chance to enjoy the camaraderie
of people who are working towards the same goal.
Welcome Aboard!
Volunteering
The Schooner Adventure is
seeking hard-working volunteers for a wide variety of
tasks. There is something for everyone and for every skill level.
And no matter what your level of commitment is—be it volunteering
for a one-time event or coming in every week at a regular time—Adventure needs
your help! Please browse our volunteer opportunities listed
below and feel free to contact us for more
information.
We do ask all
volunteers to become members of the Schooner Adventure.
This is mainly for insurance reasons and to keep our administration
costs down (i.e. working with and updating one mailing list/database).
If membership would prevent you or someone you know from volunteering,
please call the office for information on discounted memberships.
Current Volunteer Opportunities:
OFFICE VOLUNTEERS
The offices of the Schooner Adventure are located on the
third floor of the Fitz Henry Lane House and can be an extremely
busy place. The Adventure staff would welcome
any volunteers who are interested in desktop
publishing, mailings, curatorial/photographic archival work, answering
the telephone, filing, assisting with fundraising, public relations,
membership and volunteer outreach, distributing posters and brochures,
and general administration.
Office volunteers
can fit into many categories. Some just help with the quarterly
Mug-Up mailing, others sign up for a specific time slot each week,
while others simply drop by and help out when they can. This is
an area where there is always something to do.
To volunteer for office work or
to get more information, call Joanne Souza or Sally Curry at the
Adventure office, 978-281-8079, or send an email.
HANDS-ON SCHOONER
WORK
Volunteers are needed every Saturday starting at 9:30AM onboard
Adventure to help with the ongoing restoration project. Currently,
we are doing basic cleaning, scraping and painting as the hull
restoration is being completed.
This is a fun group of men and
women of all ages who are always taking on challenging new tasks
as they develop.
Great fun! Great project! No experience
necessary.
The Adventure is currently
docked in Gloucester Harbor next to the new Cruiseport Gloucester
Marine Terminal off of Main Street/Rogers Street in Gloucester,
MA. Check out our customized Google
Map for driving directions.
To become part of the vessel crew,
contact the Adventure office at 978-281-8079 or email Vessel Crew
coordinator, Peter
Souza — or just come down to
the Adventure on
Saturday morning and say hello.
SHIP’S
STORE
The Adventure Ship’s Store is our gift shop, which
is located on and adjacent to the vessel. The Ship’s
Store is a vital part of our organization’s income, especially
during this time of restoration when our shipboard events are limited.
Working
in the store offers volunteers a chance to greet the public and
be Adventure's ambassadors. All volunteers will be fully trained
in the daily operations of the store and well-versed in Adventure's
history. Store volunteers will
also have the opportunity to work at booths at the events we travel
to during the summer season.
To volunteer for the Ship's Store,
either contact the Adventure office at 978-281-8079 or email the
Ship's Store Coordinator, Jude
Holmes.
LECTURE SERIES
Adventure has a very successful Natural History of Cape Ann lecture
series. For many people this is their first introduction to Adventure so this is a very important outreach program. All lectures are
geared towards area natural resources, both land-based and maritime.
Volunteer activities include brainstorming for lecture ideas,
booking venues, distributing posters, and setting up resource
information. All lectures are filmed for the local cable channel.
If you have any interest in becoming a volunteer photographer
for the local cable channel please contact Joanne Souza to set
up training.
Some volunteers will have an interest
in investigating resources and contacting speakers while others
may feel more comfortable helping with the mailings and poster
distribution.
To volunteer for the Lecture Series,
call Joanne Souza or Sally Curry at the Adventure office,
978-281-8079, or send an email.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Adventure events serve two purposes—fundraising
and increased public awareness of the vitality of the organization.
It is important to let everyone know that the restoration of Adventure is
proceeding and the more activities and events there are involving
the boat, the more the public will want to support it—the
snowball effect.
Examples of Adventure’s
events include: Adventure Restoration Updates and Chantey
Sings, the Mayor’s Cup Reception for the Gloucester
Schooner Festival, the Adventure Annual Meeting, Auction,
and various festivals. Volunteers are needed for planning, picking
up supplies (such as food, drinks and decorations), setting up/cleaning
up, helping out during the event and stimulating attendance by
contacting people.
The fun we have and the friendships
that develop while working together for a common goal are significant
benefits in addition to raising funds for Adventure’s
mission.
To volunteer for Special Events,
call Joanne Souza or Sally Curry at the Adventure office,
978-281-8079, or send an email.
Volunteers who have been involved with other community
service projects will find the hands-on experience of joining our Adventure volunteer
team a unique experience.
If you can give your time and talent to any of
these areas please contact Adventure office
at 978-281-8079 or send an email.
